HINSON'S ROAD TRIP

This year we decided to do a family road trip. This hasn't been done in 20 years, especially for extended amounts of time...haha. But we got a long great, had a lot of fun, and saw some beautiful country. We left on Sept 1 and returned on Sept 10 - 10 days. So, here we go!

On our way...
On Sept 1, we left Mom & Dad's house at 4 am, with our friend's, Ann, minivan. God bless her. It was comfy and had doors that opened on both sides for the back seats. This came in handy on many occasions.

Rachel and I wanted to make a stop in Sapulpa, OK to visit the family that graciously helped Mom & Dad when their truck motor blew a couple of years ago when they were on their way to California delivering some horses. The family wasn't there, but we had to get a picture of them standing in front of the building.

Outside of Oklahoma City, there were hundreds of massive wind generators. Not something that we see very often.

Large cross outside of Amarillo, TX
Mom always wanted to stop and see the crucifixion of Christ that a man sculptured out of metal near Amarillo, Tx .

The cross is a giant made of metal also. The man did this out of the kindness of his heart. Someone donated the land to him.

We made it into Albuquerque, NM that night in a downpour, and was ready to hit the hay.

Bandera Volcano, Ice Caves, Meteor Crater

On Day 2, we went to Bandera Volcano and the Ice Caves in Grants, NM. Bandera Volcano was the remains of an ancient volcano that is 900 ft deep and 2500 ft across. There was some beautiful scenery.

The Ices Caves was a hike to the other side of the park that took you to a lava tube. This is where a large bubble of air came up through the lava and a pool of ice formed in it. You can see the ice from the top. We were in 100 degree temps at ground level, and it was 28 degrees when you walked 50 feet down to the ice. Pretty neat and strange.

Our next stop was to the Meteor Crater in Winslow, AZ. This is the largest known meteor crater in the world - 4000 ft across & 550 ft deep.

South Rim of the Grand Canyon
We made it to the South Rim on the third day. The park ranger told us the reason there was smoke throughout the canyon, was because there was a forest fire at the East Rim, that was under control, but they were allowing to burn underbrush. Otherwise, the weather was great, and we took many pictures.

When we left the South Rim, we stopped at an Indian Jewelry Sale, and found some new pieces to wear. There were native singers entertaining shoppers, and these children doing ceremonial dances with hoops. The kids were great!

Grand Canyon Skywalk ~ West Rim
After leaving the jewelry sale, we headed to the West Rim to

We made it to Vegas!

Hoover Dam & Valley of Fire

Zion National Forest

Four Corners & Dam

Meza Verde National Forest

Durango-Silverton Train, CO

Royal Gorge

Estes Park, CO

It's a Wrap!
